Bénard, Nicolas (fl. circa 1617)
Le Voyage de Hierusalem et autres Lieux de la Terre Sainte.

Paris: Denis Moreau, 1621.

Likely first edition, octavo, illustrated with engraved title, author portrait, and full-page engraving of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher; bound in full contemporary limp parchment, lacking ties (contents lightly and evenly toned); ex libris Paola & Bertrand Lazard with bookplate inserted; 6 3/4 x 4 1/4 in.

"As his travel account makes clear, the personal and consequently narrative climax of the entire journey was the knighting ritual that took place during the overnight stay of the pilgrims in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher." (Quoted from Meggan C. Armstrong's The Holy Land and the Early Modern Reinvention of Catholicism, Cambridge University Press, 2021.)

An unreliable record in Worldcat mentions what may be a ghost entry for a 1616 edition. The spuriousness of this claim is bolstered by the fact that Bénard sailed from Paris for the Holy Land in September of 1616 and was made a knight of the Holy Sepulcher in a ceremony at the Holy Sepulcher on February 2, 1617, making a publication date of 1616 untenable. Very rare at auction.
