Wellesley College was founded in 1870. Twenty eight years later Scribner's published an article on undergraduate life at the all-women's college. It covers many aspects of the Wellesley experience, quite a few of which are depicted in this Edward Penfield-esque poster. Well-dressed young women mill about outside East Lodge (the original main entrance to the campus), some with sporting equipment and bicycles, and others with books. Gilbert was a prominent and highly-regarded illustrator whose work frequently appeared in the pages of Scribner's. This is his only known poster. rare. We could only find one other copy at auction.
