One of three posters this artist is known to have designed promoting travel to the island off India's Southern coast, including one for Air Ceylon. Currently known as Sri Lanka, Ceylon was a British colony until it achieved its independence in 1948. The Ceylon Daily News from Friday September 24, 1948, pictures this poster and Samarasinha's other Ceylon image as the first and second place winners in the Government Tourist Bureau's design competition. This second place image illustrates Mount Lavinia Beach. The third place prize went to G.S. Fernando's poster of a temple (see Lot 31).
