HARD-BOILED DUMMY CAIN, JAMES M. The Postman Always Rings Twice. 8vo, publisher's tan cloth stamped in blue, faint finger-soiling; top edges stained blue; preserved in custom navy cloth clamshell box with leather lettering piece on spine, frayed along one edge. New York, 1934

Additional Details

extremely rare surviving publisher's "dummy" sample copy. It includes the title-page, stated first edition on the copyright page and text through page 16, the remaining leaves blank. We can locate no other like copies offered at auction or in any public holdings. As this was Cain's first novel, the number of other sample copies printed can be assumed to have been limited, to say the least. An unrecorded, possibly unique example in surprisingly fine condition.
