CAIRO / SHEPHEARD'S HOTEL.
571/2x411/4 inches. Richter, Naples.
Condition B: expertly restored losses in bottom margin affecting image and text; repaired tears and overpainting in margins affecting image and text.
Another of Borgoni's grand, Liberty-style hotel posters, again for two of Cairo's grandest and most elegant hostelries. Here the pyramids and Sphinx are presented from a different angle, and the camel-riding Egyptian in the foreground is colored to appear as part of the poster's border. Built in 1841 by Samuel Shepheard, the hotel was originally a stopping-over spot for British passengers traveling to India. The hotel was commandeered by Napoleon as his headquarters in 1849. The hotel burned down in 1952.
