Since 1854, when the first California State Fair was held in San Francisco, the yearly event has been a very popular attraction. Held in Sacramento since 1859, the fair has occupied three different parcels of land. The California Grizzly Bear, extinct since 1922, was designated as state animal in 1953, making this shadowy figure a grim reminder of the "progress" of man.
