Additional Details

first edition of callaghan's celebrated first novel. Signed and dated in the month of publication. Callaghan, a Toronto native, had published several stories in Ezra Pound's expatriate magazine, Exile, before coming to the attention of Scribner's editor Maxwell Perkins, who asked Callaghan to send ahead a few stories and this novel. For reasons not entirely clear, this raised the ire of Pound, about whom Perkins said to Callaghan that he had "an abusive champion whose temperament was past his understanding"--Callaghan. That Summer in Paris.
