Additional Details

Harry Callahan (1967), 33.

This image was presented in the first of a 4-year long exhibition series, beginning in 1952, that was entitled "Diogenes with a Camera," and organized by Edward Steichen. The title paid homage to the Greek philosopher who dedicated his life to the search for truth.

Each show focused on a single photographer or small group of artists. Callahan and photographers such as Eliot Porter, W. Eugene Smith, Frederick Sommer, Edward Weston and Esther Bubley were also featured in the series.
