Julia Margaret Cameron took up photography in 1863, her late 40s, when her eldest daughter gave her a camera, and instantly became enthralled. A portrait artist who enjoyed taking photographs of her children, acquaintances and the multitude of scholars and artists with whom she was associated, early on she worked closely with Lewis Carroll and Oscar Rejlander, learning about photographic techniques and collaborating on pictures. Her masterful use of light, attention to composition, and long exposures captured her sitters in highly imaginative ways. Cameron also explored literary themes in her photography creating a series of allegorical portraits that referenced works by Tennyson and Shakespeare.
