In 1875 Cameron returned to the East, where she was born and had spent much of her life. She settled in the village Kalutara, Sri Lanka, and photographed many of the local inhabitants. Fewer than 30 of these late Sir Lankan portraits are known, of which this tender, ethereal portrait is a rare and important example.
This print was exhibited at the Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, in their exhibition "100 Drawings and Photographs," from November 2-December 22, 2001 (it is also reproduced in the catalogue accompanying the exhibit).
