CAMILLE MARTIN (1861-1898) L'ESTAMPE ORIGINALE. 1895.
241/2x353/4 inches.
Condition A-: vertical and horizontal folds.
Martin died fairly young and very little biographical information is known about him. And yet he created this poster for one of the most important publications in the history of print collecting. Begun in 1893 by Andre Marty, with text by Roger Marx, L'Estampe Originale "was privileged to begin the renewal and to give impetus to the contemporary print movement" (Color Revolution p. 92). Between 1893 and 1895, prints were issued to subscribers on a quarterly basis. The selection of artists is rather eclectic but includes such major artists as Toulouse-Lautrec, Gaugin, Renoir and Redon. Martin chooses to give a very light image of a lithographic press and vines, leaving a lot of white paper visible. The influence of Aureol and Riviere can clearly be seen in this approach, which is an elegant, decorative allegory. DFP-II 566.
