CAMILLE PISSARRO
La Charrue.

Color lithograph on smooth cream wove paper, 1901. 215x151 mm; 8 1/2x6 inches, full margins. Second state (of 3), before the artist's signature on the stone and publication in Les Temps Nouveaux. One of approximately only 14 impressions in this state printed in colors, there were also approximately 14 monochromatic impressions in this state printed in a single color. Inscribed "ep. d'essai no. 9" in pencil, lower left. A superb impression with vibrant colors.

This is the only color lithograph made by Pissarro; he evidently found color lithography to be insufficient as a medium for the representation of nature. This color lithograph was created as the frontispiece for the journal Les Temps Nouveaux, published by Jean Grave, Paris, to accompany the text of a lecture by Prince Kropotkin (1842-1921), the Russian activist and anarchist. Delteil 194.
