CAMILLE PISSARRO
Le Père Melon au Repos.

Charcoal on cream laid paper mounted on card stock, circa 1879. 242x315 mm; 9 3/4x12 1/4 inches. With the artist's signature ink stamp (Lugt 2031b, lower right recto).

Ex-collection private collection, New York.

This drawing is a study for the same-titled oil painting, 1879, now in a private collection, London (see Pissarro and Snollaerts, Pissarro: Critical Catalogue of Paintings, Paris, 2005, volume II; page 410, number 609 [illustrated]); offered Sotheby's, "Panorama: A New Perspective," Hong Kong, March 29, 2018-April 3, 2018, lot 27.

Pissarro (1830-1903) also made an etching of the subject, in reverse, Paysan: Le Père Melon, 1879 (Delteil 25).

According to Pissarro and Snollaerts, "The actual identity of the peasant shown here is not known. Père Melon also appears in several of the artist's pastels, gouaches and drawings, as well as a print."
