CAMILLE PISSARRO
Marché de Pontoise.

Etching and drypoint on wove paper, 1888. 99x62 mm; 4x2 1/2 inches, full margins. Second state (of 3). One of only 2 known impressions in this state, from a total of approximately only 9 lifetime impressions in all three states combined. Titled and inscribed "2e état no. 1" in pencil, lower margin. A superb, early impression of this extremely scarce print, with crisp plate edges.

We have found only 3 other lifetime impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Another impression, in the first state, is in the Musée du Luxembourg.

This small, intimate drypoint, relates to a larger oil by Pissarro, Le Marché à la volaille, Pontoise, 1882, now in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena. In the painting, as in the drypoint, the foreground is dominated by two country women with their backs turned to the viewer, facing a busy market scene in the background. Delteil 75.
