CAMILLE PISSARRO
Paysans portant du foin.

Etching and drypoint printed in dark brown, 1900. 120x83 mm; 43/4x31/4 inches, small margins. Seventh state (of 7). From La Vie artistique. A very good, clean impression.

The most prolific Impressionist printmaker, Pissarro (1830-1903) produced approximately 190 etchings and lithographs, mostly images of peasants in the French countryside and portraits (see lot 102). He worked closely with Degas during the 1870s to acquire the technical mastery of etching and aquatint. In their bold linear configurations, his etchings reveal a profund admiration for the graphic work of Rembrandt as well as Millet. Delteil 126.
