A very rare engraving, one of only two known portraits of Capitein (1718-1747), who was one of only a few educated Africans in Western Europe in the 18th century. Capitein was an ordained Protestant minister, and the author of The Agony of Asar, a Thesis on Slavery [Leyden, 1742].
