CARAN D'ACHE (EMMANUEL POIRE) EXPOSTION RUSSE. 1897.
52 7/8x33 3/4 inches. Herold, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image; minor losses and slight discoloration along vertical and horizontal folds.
Caran d'Ache was excited that the Tsar of Russia came to Paris to sign a treaty of alliance with the French. Among the many events organized in conjunction with this historic visit was a Russian Exhibition on the Champs de Mars. The bold image is divided into three parts by diagonal bands of color and shows a mounted Cossack saluting the Parisian public. The image of the shadowy army in the background is reminiscent of Caran d'Ache's poster for the Chat Noir. Maitres pl 70.
