Additional Details

"Horatio Alger Jr. was my private tutor before I entered Columbia College in 1885 . . . I think he must have taught us for four or five years . . . Mr. Alger was a man of very simple habits and manner. His chief interest I think were literary. Science at all events played little part in our curriculum . . . Every Christmas he presented us with a set of his books . . ."
Mayes was the author of Alger, a Biography Without a Hero (1928) a fictitious biography which became the standard account of Alger's life. This letter suggests that he made some effort at real research into his subject's life.
