CAREY, MATHEW. Carey's General Atlas, Improved and Enlarged. 58 engraved mapsheets, hand-colored in outline. Folio, 420x285 mm, original boards, rebacked and retipped with morocco; maps generally bright and clean and without the browning along the fold almost universally found on Carey maps; ex-library with bookplate on pastedown, and a discreet embossed stamp on each map. Philadelphia, 1816

Additional Details

Apparently, the rarest edition of Carey's General Atlas, with only one imperfect copy (missing a map) located at Harvard. Title page dated 1816 with a listing of 58 maps; and 3 pages of Preparatory Remarks dated 17 March 1814. Not to be confused with the General Atlas put out jointly by Carey and Benjamin Warner with a virtually identical title calling for 58 maps, but only half the size and with different maps. The 1816 edition here appears to have the same maps as the 1814 edition. Ristow, page 151. Not in Rumsey.
