CARL OTTO CZESCHKA (1878-1960) NORD-DEUTSCHE VERSICHERUNGS-GELLSCHAFT. 1912.
15 5/8x17 inches. Julius Sittenfeld, Berlin.
Condition A. Framed.
From being a pupil in the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, Czeschka went on to become a graphic designer, typographer, illustrator and commercial artist. A practitioner of Judenstil and a Secessionist, he Joined the Wiener Werkstätte in 1905, and went on to teach at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and at an arts school in Hamburg. Here, for a German insurance company, he manages to turn a burning building into a decorative motif. No ordinary burning building however, he depicts the great fire of 1842 that destroyed one of Hamburg's oldest churches, the Petrikirche. The scene is placed within an elaborate, swirling, gilt, floral arrangement.
