CARL SHREVE SEMPER FIDELIS. 1943.
28x21 inches. McCandlish Litho, Philadelphia.
Condition A. Paper.
Two contemporary, battle-scarred marines are rushing off into the thick of a battle to the ethereal beat of a drummer from their corps' history. For 168 years the Marines have been "always faithful" and the history of their strength and resolve is captured in both the coiled serpent "Don't Tread on me" symbol on the Colonial-era Marine's drum and the looks of fierce determination on the faces of the present-day warriors. "Symbolism and tradition are touchstones of military poster art" (Meehan cat. 22). This is the smallest of three sizes.
