CARL SPRINCHORN
Provincetown Houses.

Watercolor on paper. 280x337 mm; 11x13 1/4 inches. Signed in watercolor, lower right recto, and inscribed "Provincetown" in pencil, verso.

Sprinchorn (1887-1971) studied with Robert Henri in New York from 1903 until 1910 and then traveled to Paris for a year to study at the Académie Colarossi. His early modern subjects, before he sought out the figures and scenery of Maine, included Parisian city scenes, theater, dance halls and cafés. Sprinchorn befriended Marsden Hartley in 1916 (the two met in Provincetown) and had his first visit to Maine with Hartley in 1919.
