CARL THEODOR DREYER (1889-1968)

[Book Cover "Antonin Artaud Selected Writings."]
Silver print with retouching paint, the image measuring 191x241 mm, 7½x9½ inches, the mount measuring 229x279 mm, 9x11 inches, with size notations in ink on print recto and Artaud's name in pencil on mount recto; with the original coversheet with notations related to the reproduction on Sontag's book. 1928; printed early 1970s.

This image was used on the cover of Susan Sontag's celebrated 1976 book Antonin Artaud Selected Writings. The retouching visible on this print (which removes one side of the cross held by the figure on the left and a cross rising on the top of the church in the background) corresponds to the cover of Sontag's book. The image (with Artaud on the right, who played the role of the monk Massieu) comes from a scene in Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 film "The Passion of Joan of Arc." Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) was a French artist who is considered a major figure of the European avant-garde. He is well-known for his writing, as well as for his influence on theater.
