Naef and Hult-Lewis, Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Photographs (The J. Paul Getty Museum), cat. no. 490, p. 210.

Naef and Hult-Lewis included a brief account about Watkins' visit to The Dalles, which appeared in the local newspaper The Weekly Mountaineer. The journalist reported, ". . . Mr. Watkins thinks [this] will make one of the finest pictures of any he has taken. The printing will not be done until he returns to San Francisco."
