CARLO LABRUZZI
(Rome 1748-1817 Perugia)
Group of 4 landscape gouache drawings.

Avanzo del Tempio della Concordia * Cascatelle nella Villa Maecenas a Tivoli * Tempio della Fortuna Virile * Arco di Galliano. Each gouache on heavy cream laid paper. Each approximately 93x143 mm; 3 3/4x5 3/4 inches.

Though largely forgotten during the 19th and much of the 20th-century, Labruzzi was once among the most sought-after and successful topographical painters of his day. His views in and around Rome were immensely popular among the English and others on the Grand Tour. Two scholarly articles published in 1960 helped Labruzzi's regain his place as a historically significant artist: Watson, "A Forgotten Artist of the 18th-Century: Carlo Labrussi," The Antique Collection, June 1960, pages 95-101; and Sutton, "An 18th-Century Artist Rediscovered," Country Life June 1960, pages 1438-39.
