The Puerto Rican poster boom that occurred in the 1950s was due entirely to the creation of DIVEDCO, the División de Educación de la Comunidad (Division of Community Education). DIVEDCO served primarily as a propagandistic arm of the Puerto Rican Government, aimed at educating and "transforming its rural population into a model of modern, democratic citizenry" (Smithsonian, "Posters from the Division of Community Education (DIVEDCO) of Puerto Rico, 1949-1989," press release, Sept 17, 2008). Carlos Rivera illustrated both books and posters for DIVEDCO from 1953-1963. The film "Nenen de la Ruta Mora" (Little Boy from the Moorish Way), was noted for its experimental approach (showing serious issues such as sexism and segregation through the eyes of a young boy).
