In her evocative Sea Islands series, Carrie Mae Weems interprets the environs and lives of the Gullah people of the Sea Islands. Weems became interested in these unique African-American communities off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina while studying folklore in graduate school from 1984-87 at the University of California, Berkeley. The isolated Gulla residents are the direct descendants of freed slaves who maintained many cultural links to their African past. Using both photographs and texts, Weems conveys the enduring richness of the Gullah culture and spiritual life with an distinctive artistic eye. This grouping of untitled four panels from the series is being offered at auction for the first time. Delmez p. 106.
