Carroll wrote this letter at age 86, when he was well on his way to becoming the final surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Here he observes, "My time of life, my stay here is very uncertain; even should I live a year or two more, I may become so infirm in the interim as to disqualify me from seeing those most dear to me."
