Spain's national motto, "Plus Ultra," (further beyond) originates in mythology on the pillars of Hercules, and was adapted by King Charles I of Spain as his personal motto in the 16th century. The significance of the pillars and the motto to Spain are such that it appears on both the country's flag and its coat of arms. It also lends itself perfectly to an airline company. Here a Douglas DC-4, which began flying in 1946, is flying further beyond the borders of Spain, bringing travelers around the world.
