The descriptions of "Horrid and Unexampled Massacres, Butcheries, and all manner of Cruelties . . . committed by the Popish Spanish Party on the Inhabitants of West-India" made for excellent English propaganda. However, the preface insists that it the translation was published more generally to combat "the dismal and pernicious fruits" of "unlimitted and close fisted avarice . . . for the publick Emolument and Advantage of all true Christians and moral Men throughout the whole World."
