CECIL C. BELL
Beneath the El Station, New York.

Oil on canvas. 610x510 mm; 24x20 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. With the artist's estate stamp, verso.

Born in Seattle, Bell (1906-1970) studied printmaking at the Chicago Art Institute before moving to New York to study at the Art Students League with John Sloan. He remained in New York, eventually settling in Staten Island with his wife, and most of his paintings depict famous locations around the city. Largely unknown during his lifetime, a retrospective was held at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, following his death in 1973.
