La Moulin de la Galette, which was built around an authentic 17th century Montmartre windmill, existed before the more famous Moulin Rouge opened in 1889, and it remained highly popular. In addition to the posters advertising the cabaret, artists such as Renoir, van Gogh, and Pissarro have immortalized the venue in paintings. Named for the "Galette," the type of bread produced by the owners of the mill, this building has served many different purposes over the years, including an open-air cafe, music-hall, television studios and restaurant.
