number 79 of 175 copies signed in pencil by chagall.One of his last illustrated books and one that evokes the compositions and elegant, restrained feel of his etchings for his Bible of 1956. Both sets of images were inspired by his trip to Palestine to study its range of light and shadow. In an attempt to depict the events of Jewish history, and reminiscent of Rembrandt's etchings, Chagall liked the way the medium achieved the effects that would be difficult to achieve in paint or lithograph.
