CHAIM GROSS
Seated Female Nude.

Carved wood sculpture. 350 mm; 13 3/4 inches (height). Incised signature on the lower back.

After moving to America in 1914, Gross (1904-1991) delivered groceries during the day to fund night art classes at the Educational Alliance Art School. A fellow student took note of his drawings and suggested he try a sculpture class. "It was an invaluable suggestion," said Gross, "for I soon realized that sculpture was the form of creative work that truly appealed to me." Living in an attic apartment on 14th Street, Gross continued to refine his carving techniques. Visiting lumber yards throughout Manhattan, he would select various wood--both native and exotic--with a wide range of color and rich grains.
