Cappiello's style attracted a lot of wine, champagne and liquor producers. As the demand for his posters increased, he began to draw maquettes in series, on speculation, leaving it to his printer and agent, Vercasson, to sell the images onto which Cappiello could then add the customer's name. That's how, in 1903, Cappiello came to design three very similar posters for Champagne (see Swann/Art Nouveau sale 1945, lot 15)-on each a smiling, happy woman is playing with a bottle of champagne and a glass. Here, the contents of a recently opened bottle cleverly mix with the hatching of the background. Wine Spectator no. 158, Grand Palais p. 120 no. 245.
