Additional Details

An excellent reference, providing a history of the production of cane sugar from each parish of Louisiana, with the number of hogsheads from each plantation. Charts show comparative output from 1828 through 1858: 88,000 hogsheads in 1828, as opposed to 362,296 in 1858, a considerable uptick in production. This huge growth in production clearly indicates a proportional growth in the slave population, without whom this could not have been accomplished.
