CHARLES ALSTON (1907 - 1977)
Composition #1.

Oil on cotton canvas, 1960. 406x508 mm; 16x20 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right.

Provenance: Harry L. Stone, New York; private collection, New York.

Exhibited: Charles Alston, Feingarten Galleries, New York, April, 1960, with the label on the frame back.

This attractive oil by Charles Alston is a very good example of his mid-career abstraction. In 1960, Alston received the Emily Lowe Memorial award for An Ancient Place, and had a solo exhibition at Feingarten Galleries, New York. Alston was one of the founding members of the Spiral group in the summer of 1963 with Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis and Hale Woodruff. Jennings p. 22.
