CHARLES ALSTON (1907 - 1977)
Deserted House.

Lithograph, circa 1938. 283x387 mm; 11 1/8x15 1/4 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin. A very good, dark impression of this very scarce print.

We have found only one other impression - in the collection of Reba and Dave Williams that was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1999. This is only the third print of Charles Alston's to come to auction; the last sold at Swann Galleries on September 15, 2005.

Illustrated: An impression from the Reba and Dave Williams Collection in Alone in a Crowd, p. 14, pl. 9, and African-American Artists, 1929-1945, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, p. 39.

According to Lisa Gail Collins in the latter catalogue, this lithograph was "created soon after Alston returned from a long investigative journey through the Deep South with Farm Security Administration (FSA) inspector." Messinger/Collins p. 39
