Like Norman Lewis, Alston painted with black in a series of works through the late 1950s and early 1960s . He "considered the black and white abstractions in a retrospective shown in 1968 to be amongst his most important he had done." A founding member of the Spiral Group in 1964, Alston continued to paint abstract works through the early 1960s. Romare Bearden and Harry B.
