This is one of several colorful studies on paper in various media that Charles Alston made for his 1958 oil painting Walking, which was inspired by the marches during the Civil Rights movement. The painting is now in the collection of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
