This drawing is listed in the Charles E. Burchfield Foundation Archives, Inventory # 249.9, in the folder titled "1949-1953 MY LIST OF DRAWINGS & SIZES," on the "List of Drawings in Cleveland - also - drawings sold at Athens, O." This refers to the exhibition, "The Drawings of Charles E. Burchfield," Cleveland Museum of Art, November 4-December 31, 1953.

Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar and Head of Collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey Curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, writes in the accompanying report, "Burchfield was quite intrigued with the "cave" effect of shadows in woods. In 1918, he made several sketches of this kind of subject that resulted in a small painting that he reworked and expanded in 1956: In the Deep Woods, 1918-56. Given that the drawing is dated a year later, it shows his continued interest in the subject."
