CHARLES BURCHFIELD
Frozen House in Winter.

Watercolor and gouache on paper mounted on card stock, circa 1918. 353x460 mm; 14x18 1/8 inches.

Accompanying this lot is a research report completed by the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, New York.

Ex-collection private collection, New York; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, New York.

While the location of the house in the current work is unknown, Burchfield intended many of the house images he made like the current work to appear individualized and to adorn them with human attributes--in this case the surprised curtain-eyed windows and icicle hair hanging from the roof. The artist remarked, referring to one of his "portraits" of a house in Buffalo, New York, "There were, and still are, many houses like this in Buffalo. Depending on the lighting or time of day, the house shows expressions of various moods. In this drawing the look of astonishment lies within it. There is also a feeling of fright, and even of melancholy."
