Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar and Head of Collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey Curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, writes in the accompanying report, "trains and rail yards were subjects in this style circa 1917-1920." Around this time, Burchfield began edging more towards realism, and started creating compositions showing industrial development and city architecture. This shift was solidified after 1921, after he moved to Buffalo, New York, and increasingly depicted urban scenes, often with a slightly sinister mood (mirroring his discontent with living farther away from nature).
