CHARLES E. BURCHFIELD
Hot Morning.

Watercolor, gouache and pencil on cream wove paper, 1915. 228x300 mm; 9x11 7/8 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right recto, and titled and dated "Hot Morning -- Summer 1915" in pencil, verso.

Nancy Weekly, Head of Collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey Curator of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, writes in a letter accompanying this work: "Burchfield created a number of works in the summer and fall of 1915 that he called his 'primary color period,' in which he employed rich, saturated Fauvist colors and used blue and violet for shadows instead of black. It is possible that he may have painted Hot Morning from a vantage point of his home."

This work has been confirmed as Slide No. 368 in the Charles E. Burchfield Foundation's slide documentation of the artist's estate. The painting at one time may have been held by Kennedy Galleries Inc., New York, which managed Burchfield's estate for many years. With an authentication by the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, October 12, 2012.
