CHARLES KUHN (1903-1999) TAXAMETER / SELNAU 77-77. 1928. 50 1/2x35 1/2 inches, 128x90 cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich. Condition A-: repaired tears and foxing in margins; abrasions in image. Trained as an apprentice in the Wolfsberg printing plant, Kuhn went on to open his own graphic design studio. He was very active during the 1940s, designing luggage labels as well as posters, and won several awards for his work. This rare early work is for a Zurich taxi company. It is a strict Art Deco image built along a powerful diagonal, with the company's telephone number prominently printed along the bottom. [Earlier in the 1920s, Otto Morach created two exceptional images for a competing taxi company in the same town, clearly creating the need for more advertising.] Suisses 41.
