"A felicitous poster . . . regarded as a classic" (Villard/Allen p. 54), in which both the novelty and romance that surrounded early air flight are visible. 1909 witnessed the proliferation of flying exhibitions and tournaments all around the world, and to advertise this event, "a combination of sport and spectacle" (ibid.), a daring young aviator in his improbable flying machine is soaring over the Cote d'Azur, casting colorful roses from his open cockpit.
