CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962)

BONNETERIE DE SPORT / J.G. WEITH. 1918.

49 3/4x34 1/2 inches, 126 1/4x87 1/2 cm. Atar, Geneva.
Condition B+: expertly-repaired tear at bottom right edge, through text; expert, unobtrusive overpainting along repaired tears and creases in margins and image; minor restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; small replaced losses in corners. Mounted on Japan with archival reinforcements on verso.

After studying in Lyon, Loupot fought and was wounded in the First World War. He returned from the front and settled in Lausanne, where his parents were living, and quickly began his successful career as a poster designer. Most of his work was for the fashion and luxury goods industries. His style, a combination of the high-profile Swiss School and his own light French touch, worked very well for the products he was asked to advertise. A charming and rare image of a sportily-clad woman on her way to go ice skating. We have located only two other copies at auction since 1994. Loupot 29, La Femme 11.
