CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) MARTINGAY. 1919.

This very sophisticated image shows a Loupot who has already acquired a strong visual personality, no longer using a flat, dark background that showed the influence of Cappiello. Depicting Spring via an elegant young lady listening to the twitters of love birds in a cage, he employs a sophisticated creamy light-colored background that eventually became characteristic of his style. He also departs, possibly for the first time, from realistic depictions of products to more suggestive approaches, poetically hinting at the Spring fashions available in this store. With so much artistic ability, it is easy to see why, when Loupot came to Paris, Lucien Vogel immediately commissioned him to join Lepape and Barbier to help illustrate the mystical Gazette du Bon Ton.
