CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962)

PEUGEOT / LA GRANDE MARQUE NATIONALE. 1926.

43¾x62¾ inches, 111x159½ cm. Les Belles Affiches, Paris.
Condition B+: replaced losses with overpainting in margins, some into image; repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image; unobtrusive bleach spots in image. Framed.

Loupot summed up his work in the following way, "The lazy eye must be continuously surprised by a simple and perfect graphic art" (Weill p. 208), and in this stunning, audacious Art Deco image, Loupot displays a masterful ability to convey speed. He depicts the front of a vehicle ascending a hill, vibrating with the energy beneath its hood and powering its mighty engine. The splash of color overlapping the car is the French tricolor cockade, not only blurry in the vehicle's ascent, but also a perfect visual connection to Peugeot's slogan on the poster, "the great national brand."
