CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962)

ST. RAPHAËL. 1938.

62½x47 inches, 158¾x119½ cm. Courbet, Paris.
Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed.

From 1937 to 1960, Loupot worked hand in hand with Max Augier, the advertising director of St. Raphaël, creating a series of posters that tell of a unique saga in the story of advertising. This is the third poster Loupot designed for the company and the first with a prevailing sense of geometric harmony and balance (Loupot p. 91). It was also the beginning of a years-long campaign in which Loupot gradually moved towards creating more and more abstracted, geometric stylizations of the two waiters and his continuous transformation of the typography of the company's logo. Rare. We can locate only 4 other copies at auction since 1998.

Crouse p. 193, Loupot 105, Reina Sofia p. 133.
